First Visit

Young child smiling at the camera with only a few teeth If you are a new parent, you know what a wonderful, difficult job that is. There is so much to consider when you are the parent of a young child. You are responsible for the care of your child, and their health is up to you. Along with your child's physical and mental health, you have to consider their dental health as well. At what age should you take your child to the dentist? What should you expect from the dentist? Jacobsen Pediatric Dentistry has got some answers for you about what the first visit to the dentist should look like.

When Should The First Visit Happen?

While your relatives and parents may give you lots of answers on this topic, the reality is very simple. Most experts believe that your child's first visit to the dentist should take place six months after your child's first tooth erupts. The reason experts do not state age for the first visit is that every child is different. Some children may get their first tooth before they are a year old. Other children might get their first tooth at between six and nine months. There are also children who do not get their first tooth until they are nearly 18 months old. Whatever age your child gets their first tooth, you need to call us to go ahead and get an appointment scheduled.

What Might Be Discussed?

At the first visit, we will have a look at your child's teeth. We may ask you whether your child was bottle fed or breastfed. You may want to talk about how frequently your child eats, and whether or not they are eating solid food. You might also want to talk about your concerns; such as whether or not you should be concerned with your child's pacifier use and their thumb-sucking habits.

How to Prepare For a Visit With Us

There are several things you can do to make sure your child is ready to come and visit us. You may want to try and schedule an appointment with us at times your child is going to be happy and relaxed. For some children, this will be first thing in the morning. Other children might be better off visiting us in the afternoon.
